The patient will be put under anaesthesia. As opposed to conventional thoracic surgery where big cuts are done, robotic surgery only has 3 to 4 small incisions, approximately 8mm in diameter. With this method, patients usually go home in 2 to 3 days. Because of the smaller incisions, recovery is much faster than conventional methods. This means less pain after surgery and shorter hospital stays. Typically, patients should go back to their normal lives in approximately two weeks.
All types of lung resections can be done with robotic surgery. This includes a wedge, segmentectomy (removing a segment), lobectomy (removing a lobe of the lung), or a pneumonectomy (removing the whole lung).
