Dr Aneez D.B. Ahmed, Senior Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and Medical Director at the International Centre for Thoracic Surgery, was invited to Oli 96.8 FM on 10 June 2026 to talk about lung health, chronic cough, smoking, and lung cancer.

Why the Lungs Deserve More Attention

The conversation covered how the lungs and the heart work as a single functional unit, a "compound organ," as it was described. The heart's job is to pump blood, while the lungs act as the filter, oxygenating that blood before it circulates through the body. Because the two organs are so closely linked, the discussion made the point that lung health shouldn't be treated as separate or secondary to heart health. Problems in one system quickly affect the other.

When Should You Worry About a Cough?

One of the key questions raised was: does a cough or breathlessness automatically mean something is wrong with your lungs?

Dr. Aneez shared that an occasional cold can bring on a cough or some breathlessness, and that alone isn't cause for alarm. The real warning sign is duration. If a cough persists for a month or two without improving, that's when it needs proper medical attention. A cough that lingers that long is the body signaling that something isn't resolving on its own, and ignoring it for too long can allow an underlying issue to progress further before it's caught.

The Benefits of Quitting Smoking

Dr. Aneez shared that the lungs have a real capacity to recover after a person quits smoking, with meaningful improvement typically seen within about two years of quitting. This came across as an encouraging point for smokers considering quitting. The damage isn't necessarily permanent, and the body does work to repair itself once the harmful exposure stops.

Can Lung Cancer Be Fully Cured?

Early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment. Lung cancer is classified using a staging system, Stage 1 through Stage 4, and outcomes are strongly tied to which stage the cancer is caught at. The earlier the stage, the better the prognosis.

The landscape for lung cancer treatment in Singapore has also changed considerably over the years. Advances in detection and treatment options mean that outcomes today look different from what they were in the past, offering more hope to patients than in previous decades.

Takeaway

Don't ignore a lingering cough, understand that lung and heart health are deeply connected, and know that early detection dramatically improves outcomes for serious conditions like lung cancer. Quitting smoking, meanwhile, remains one of the most effective steps someone can take to protect long-term lung function.
